What We Value

What We Value as the Cafe Mortal

At the Café Mortal, we will try to inquire about various issues related to life and death through dialogue. Let’s create an affable atmosphere for equal and open dialogue place while respecting the following policies.

  1. Live with Death

Let’s value the attitude of “learning to live with death” (thanatology). Instead of looking at “death” as a taboo or moving away from it, not forgetting “living” while being captured by “death”, acquire the wisdom of “living with death”.

  1. Inquire Together

Some participants may have experienced a “bereavement” with an irreplaceable person, or a serious “death”. Or there may be an end-of-life care profession. We would like to listen to that valuable experience in your words. Regardless of that, life and death always have unknown parts, which is why I want you to inquire humbly with all of participants.

  1. Challenge Open Dialogue as Equals

Cafe has a tradition of discussing on an equal footing, free from social status and authority. Cafe has provided an open forum for citizens to play a major role in the formation of civil society. Inherit the spirit of the cafe, respect the other person, and try to carry on dialogue with open words as equals.

  1. Start by Listening

If there is no listener, the dialogue will not start. As a first step in a dialogue, start by listening seriously to what the other person is saying. However, you don’t have to be convinced and empathize with every word. Rather, let’s carefully create a dialogue by trying to make statements with clues that are not convincing or that you cannot easily sympathize with.

  1. Any Comments or Questions are Welcome

Each statement is a valuable contribution to interactive inquiry. Feel free to speak up without reading between the lines or worrying about the ratings of other participants. Raise profound views, unique opinions, and casual questions that reflect your way of life and the ideas that underpin it.

  1. Respect the Privacy of Participants

Please refrain from presenting personal information learned at the cafe to a third party, including on the Internet, so that all participants can open their hearts and speak with peace of mind.

The caretakers who run the Cafe Mortal will help you to meet new people and have a fruitful dialogue. Life and death are common issues for all human beings. Let’s proceed with our quest seriously, but without getting impatient.
