認知的コミュニケーションラボ（竹内研究室）では，自己と他者・モノ・環境との間のインタラクションを通した「他者の心」の認知に関する心的過程の解明と計算論的モデルによる理解を目指しています．また，この研究活動を通して得たさまざまな知見をもとに，ICTを利活用したコミュニケーションシステムの開発やグループ・コミュニティにおける情報共有を通した知的活動の促進に活かしていくための方法のデザインにも取り組んでいます．
このような研究を行うために，私たちは認知科学を基盤とした議論とAI研究も含む情報科学や，人の行動動因に着目する社会心理学や記憶や感情，意思決定などを取り扱う認知心理学，情報メディアや言語／非言語コミュニケーション，人や動物の運動・生態・進化，認識論や存在論などの心の哲学など，人の知的活動に関わるさまざまな分野・領域に対して広く興味と関心を広げ，人が人らしく生きることの意味を問い続けていきたいと考えています．
生物としての人の認知能力・身体能力の進化は，テクノロジーの発展と比べると非常に緩やかで，成長期を過ぎた後では衰えはすれど進化しているようには見えません．そのため，テクノロジーの発展は人間性のあり方と相対するものとして捉えられるようになってきました．希代の喜劇役者であるチャールズ・チャップリンが演じた『独裁者』（原題：The Great Dictator）という映画の最後のシーンで次のような演説が行われます（恐らくこれは劇中のセリフとしてではなく，チャップリン自身の言葉だったと思います）．以下に何カ所か抜粋します．
We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities life will be violent, and all will be lost.
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all.
Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men! Machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate. Only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural.
You, the people, have the power! The power to create machines. The power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Let us fight for a world of reason. A world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite!
ここでチャップリンはテクノロジー（演説中ではmachineryやmachine，aeroplane，radio, scienceなどという言葉で象徴されています）を人間性を失わせる可能性があるものとして恐れたと同時に，一方でテクノロジーを人々を結びつける力として見出し，その力を利用して人々が幸福になることに希望を託しました．私はこのチャップリンが語った約6分間の言葉（演説）を初めて耳にしたとき（当時15歳だったと思います），全身の鳥肌が立ちました．そしてこのチャップリンのテクノロジーに対する恐れと希望が今日まで私が取り組んできた研究のすべての土台になっており，認知的コミュニケーションラボは人とテクノロジーとの関係を通した人の科学的見地に基づく理解と人の幸福を創造を探究してきます．
