Using E-Textiles to Broaden Participation and Deepen Learning
This workshop focuses on a set of tools and materials called e-textiles–computers and electronics integrated into clothing and other accessories–which represent a unique nexus of three distinct and historically gendered practices: crafting, coding and electronics. This workshop will briefly review the prior research that demonstrates how these tools and materials bear traces of their unique histories of cultural use and access, representing a more inclusive (and arguably more effective) means for teaching electronics and circuitry than traditional toolkits. The workshop will engage participants in learning how to design e-textiles as well as introduce next steps for incorporation into classroom and after-school activities. The implications for rethinking our current educational toolkits to align with deeper conceptual understanding as well as a set of general design principles for fostering more equitable participation in classrooms will be discussed.
