研究内容
1)Synthetic Biology
There is a great diversity of microorganisms in the environment, each having unique DNA sequences encoding proteins that give them special abilities. Central to synthetic biology is the ability to identify DNA sequences responsible for desirable properties, and use them to engineer microorganisms with new, desirable abilities that can be controlled by specific signals.
2)Cyanobacterial Bioprocess
As a target microbe for improvement, we have focused on cyanobacteria, which are photo-synthetic microbes that can grow in very simple low-nutrient medium; all they need is sunlight, CO2, and a few trace minerals. Cyanobacteria are relatively easy to genetically manipulate and can be modified to produce many different valuable products.When cyanobacteria are used in a large scale bioprocess, the time and energy needed for harvest and cellular disruption can be quite considerable. We have therefore been working on creating a cyanobacterium that can undergo aggregation and lysis in response to light signals.
