The 17th International Conference on Physics of Advanced Materials (ICPAM-17) & The 8th Physics of Advanced Materials School (PAMS-8) were held in the period 16-23 November 2025 at Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu Campus. LINK

Daniel Moraru was the General Chair of ICPAM-17/PAMS-8, together with Prof. Felicia Iacomi (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, UAIC, Romania), Prof. Shizutoshi Ando (Tokyo University of Science), Prof. Isabelle Berbezier (Aix-Marseille University), and Dr. Valentin Crăciun (National Institute for Laser, Plasma and Radiation Physics & ELI-NP, Măgurele, Romania).

Managed by the ICPAMS Association and co-sponsored by the Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University and by Alexandru Ioan Cuza University (UAIC), Iași, this extended event brought together, mostly on-site but also online, more than 120 participants from around the world, sharing their research in a wide range of topics of materials science and device physics. There were many opportunities to learn from and exchange ideas on a few excellent Keynote Talks, several tens of Plenary Talks and Invited Talks at ICPAM-17, as well as many insightful Invited Lectures at PAMS-8. The high-quality contributed talks, either as oral presentations or poster presentations, provided the base for advanced discussions and new ideas.

Several contributions in various sections were recognized by awards, generously offered by our sponsors, either in the memory of renowned Romanian scientists, or provided by Elsevier’s Applied Surface Science, Wiley’s Advanced Materials, PhotoChem or the ICPAMS Association itself. Congratulations to all winners for their significant contributions and well-deserved recognition! However, congratulations are due to everyone for showcasing exceptional research results, with each presentation raising the standards of our conference higher and higher.

The event was completed by the Nano-Art Festival, which collected 57 artworks from artists/scientists from around the world, under the curation of Dr. Cris Orfescu.

Seeing science, such as microscope images of all sorts, as art definitely helped change the perspective on scientific research for many people in the audience. We hope that the wide variety of interactions opened new ideas to all, including new opportunities for collaborations.

From our group, we had the following contributions to the events:
(1) D. Alfafa, I. Yano, B. A. Rianto, A. Udhiarto, and D. Moraru: “Study of the effects of lateral dimensions on inter-band tunnelling of silicon-on-insulator Esaki diodes” (oral, ICPAM-17) – recognized by the Ilie Bursuc Award.
(2) T. Suzuki, D. Alfafa, M. Dobromir, and D. Moraru: “Study of graphene nano-flakes deposited on silicon oxide and Al-electrode gaps” (poster, ICPAM-17) – recognized by the Applied Surface Science Poster Prize.
(3) S. Miyagawa and D. Moraru: “Study of conditions for single-photon detection in codoped Si-single-electron transistors” (poster, PAMS-8) – recognized by the ICPAMS Award (offered by the ICPAMS Association).
(4) M. Kawasoe, T. Dixit, S. Morishita, A. Daris, and D. Moraru: “Characterization of codoped Si nanotransistors with different doping configurations” (poster, PAMS-8).
(5) I. Yano, B. A. Rianto, Y. Wakabayashi, D. Alfafa, and D. Moraru: “Study of heavily-doped highly compensated nanoscale films in a pn diode configuration” (poster, PAMS-8).
(6) C. Cobas Montero, V. Mizeikis, P. Onufrijevs, A. Zukuls, P. Scajev, and D. Moraru: “Nanosecond laseriInduced metasurfaces on silicon-on-insulator wafers for tunable optical response” (poster, PAMS-8) – recognized by the Poster presentation Award offered by Advanced Materials (Wiley) – collaboration with Riga Technical University, Latvia.

Many thanks to all the sponsors and to everyone involved for the hard work and valuable contributions.

On behalf of ICPAM-17/PAMS-8 Organizing Committee, greetings to everyone attending from Shizuoka University and… see you all soon again, in Hamamatsu or somewhere else, someday!
